My Mrs wants to use her MBP for recording as her old PC is crap and bluescreens at random times. The 13" MBP only has one audio port though! You can set it to "in" OR "out". But it also works with a mono mic in and stereo phones, so maybe one can get stereo out + mono in at the same time with the right lead?
When recording we'd want stereo in from the external mixer (which'll mix any stereo mics/synths/drum machines etc), whilst also outputting the already recorded multi-tracked parts and any click track to an amp/headphones. Is there any way to do this with a special lead? Is the best special lead only going to do mono in at the same time as stereo out?
I assume the digital optical I/O inside the mini-jack is also an "in" OR "out", and you can't get some kinda ADC/DAC optical adapter to get ins and outs at the same time?
Obviously recording music demos with the internal mic, or using the internal speakers output is a no-no as when recording with a mic you'll pick up the internal speakers if not using headphones.
Is the only solution to buy a cheap USB soundcard? Seems a bit annoying if so! I have a a £600 MOTU firewire interface you can plug into it, but that's not much use if I'm using it on my projects, whilst the Mrs wants to record some demos elsewhere with her other equipment though! Spending £100+ just for pretty basic (low quality) I/O is a bit much, and buying something much more expensive isn't justifiable when I have a £600 interface already for higher quality recordings!
Any ideas?
