hi i have a 2017 13 inch macbook pro with no touch bar and it has garbage battery and gets insanely hot so i was thinking of upgrading to the macbook air M1 but idk if it would be a downgrade or an upgrade bc it has not fan, the reason i was thinking of getting the air for the mean time is bc i need something more reliable than the computer i have now and it's cheap bc i'm planning on later on getting a 16inch when it gets upgraded to apple silicon, so idk what do you think would the air be an upgrade to the laptop i have now? btw it's base

Yeah, having similar thoughts here -- will be interesting to see what people have to say, especially ones who end up buying. Strictly from the CPU power, the new Air seems certain to be an upgrade. Wondering whether there will be a performance penalty running Intel-based apps through Rosetta.
