I have a 13inch 5,1 intel Core 2 Duo Ali body laptop, came to light yesterday that the optical drive is no longer functional, more than likely due to the fact that it has been accidently dropped a few times.

Well out of all guarrantees so I am going to replace it myself, just need to know what replacement drive to buy for this particular model, keep coming up against late year this model and late year that model. so a bit confused as what to buy.

Also a pointer to a guide would be good.

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

As far as a guide - ifixit.com

I'd go to ebay and start searching. It can be a newer drive. Search for A1278 dvd drive. The non-apple ones will work, but you may lose the ability to boot to a DVD via the hotkey.

Get the retina mac. JK, do you really need the optical drive? if not replace it with an ssd.

Thanks for all this just what I was seeking.

I still require the optical drive and am really not bothered about the retina.

I will try and fix what I have but I am also buying a new 13" Macbook pro.

i found the drive to be more troublesome. Instead, i used it for an additional 500gb (rotational :( ) drive to broaden my storage from just my 250gb ssd
