Hi
Would appreciate any thoughts on this...
I recently purchased a Samsung U28590D 28" 4K monitor for my MacBook Pro 2014 13". My main objective is retina quality on an external display at this size.
Connecting the monitor to the HDMI port (which I understand to be the only port which will support a 4K screen fully) I see a number of resolutions appear, starting at 3840 x 2160 and down to 800 x 600. The best practical resolution (i.e. text size / desktop estate) is the recommended one at 2560 x 1440; however if I want retina quality I have to drop down to 1900 x 1080. At that resolution the quality is amazing and just as good as the internal retina display.

3840 x 2160 works fine, but gives way too small text; also, the quality isn't great. Although it's sharper than 2560 x 1440.

Resolutions between 3840 x 2160 and 1900 x 1080 are listed in System Prefs as "low resolution" - and I would agree they are low resolution and definitely not retina quality.

So, I'm puzzled. My expectation is that a 4k Monitor which is supported by the MacBook over HDMI would achieve retina quality at all resolutions the monitor supports. I appreciate "retina" quality is a function of resolution and screen size; but why are the key, useful resolutions (i.e. 2560 x 1440) not working at high "retina" resolution?

Thanks!
