How does this work?

I plan on doing some recording work with my Macbook Pro and for metronome and monitor purposes you need to be able to have headphones and a microphone/guitar plugged in at once.

Is there any way to do this on the new laptops? Please let me know.

Thanks.

I have the switch between headphones and mic down, but what if I want to use both at once?

Is there any affordable product out there ($20-$40) that will allow me to do so?

I always found that to be the most awkward decision apple made, they did it on some versions of the Mac Mini IIRC, and possibly the MBA?

Just seems silly, just keep the 2 ports like it's always been, no need to overly simplify and ruin it...

I don't see this being a real issue. Just get a nice USB breakout box for your amp / mic with XLR inputs. Would be better then the built in sound board anyways.
