If your 30" dell has a displayport connector you'll be fine..

If it only has DVI, you'll need the apple mini-displayport to dual-link-dvi adapter, and it sucks major butt.

I have a dell 21. 5 inch HD and it is amazing. You will need a mini display port to Dvi, the DVI to DVI or DVI to HDMI. The only thing that annoys me is when the macbook goes to sleep you need to unplug the mini displayport to use the dell screen. It is very weird.

Does anyone know if the Dell 30in will work fine with the 13 macbook pro? Or will I run into distortion issues?

Theoretically, the graphics in the 13" can run it, but to run it at full resolution you need to buy the $100 Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter... and there have been a number of complaints that the adapter is faulty by design (and it's the only adapter of it's kind).

It doesn't matter if the Dell has a DisplayPort connector, because no one makes a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter.

Monoprice sells a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, which is much cheaper/easier than what you suggest. Regardless, HDMI doesn't support a 30" monitor's full resolution.

Would a VGA connector be ok?

No. VGA doesn't support a 30" monitor's full resolution either.

VGA connector would be fine but you need a mini display port >>> VGA then VGA to whatever else.

No, that is not true. Again, VGA doesn't support a 30" monitor's full resolution.

Has anyone tried hooking up the 30" Dell 3008WFP (the one with DisplayPort) to the 13" Macbook Pro? Any issues?

Someone in another thread mentioned he/she was running the Dell 3008WFP with the Mini-DP -> DisplayPort adapter and it worked fine.

With the 3008WFP the Displayport adapter is the only sensible option because it's cheaper and will allow full resolution without any kind of converter things needed in the adapter.
