I just got a new MBP:D , but while using a very simple program - Java based Question bank - ie nothing moving, no graphics, just text -- the brightness of the screen goes down for a few seconds and then lightens up again a few minutes goes by and down ... (like a wave).

The computer is plugged in and a CPU usage monitors (istat) shows a simultaneous spikes with the darkening of the screen.

This is very distracting. What is it, and how do I stop it??

Thanks

Did you turn off the ambient light sensor? Go to sys prefs --> Display --> uncheck automatically adjust.

That is the automatic brightness feature of the screen changing the brightness based on the ambient lighting around your notebook. You can turn off this feature by un-checking the box that says "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes" in the Displays dialog box of the System Preferences.

Thanks for the very quick response.
I just unchecked it, so lets see what happens .....
Back to my sad life of questions:(
