Just thought I'd pass this along to anyone who encounters a similar problem.

If you're having trouble upgrading your hard drive (e.g., the 13" MBP doesn't "see" the drive), make sure the MBP 13" SMC firmware update is installed.

I bought a new 13" MBP (week 23 of production) and decided to upgrade the hard drive. I had a brand-new Hitachi 320 GB 5400 RPM drive that was pulled from a 17" 2009 Apple MacBook Pro, so I decided to use that.

I was very surprised to find the 13" MBP wouldn't recognize the drive. When booting from the Apple OS X install disk that came with the MBP, the machine would just hang. I confirmed the 320 drive was good by placing it in an external enclosure and reviewing it using Disk Utility. Everything was OK. I gave up and just used the old drive.

After Apple released the SMC firmware update 1.7 I tried again and this time everything worked OK.

Apple claims that the SMC firmware update enabled faster data transfers for solid state disks, but my guess is that they also fixed other problems.

By the way, the Hitachi drive is a dog. I'm surprised that Apple would use such a disk for the flagship 17" MBP - but that is another story.

The 13" MBP is superb. Seems a shame to use such a slow drive in it, so its off to the store for a faster drive..........
