Hello All,

Just recently signed up after a few weeks of reading around the forum. :)

So I have a 15" 2008 MBP that I plan on retiring withing the next few months, and I plan on purchasing an 21.5" imac along with the base 13" MBP model by the end of July (waiting until the end of July to see if the new iMac is released) I plan on using my iMac as my main video editing machine (Also will me moving over to FCPX), and my 13" MCP as a portable computer to take along and edit on the go.

How bad do you guys think it will be video editing on a 13"? Again this won't be my primary machine but I will have it when I need it for onsite editing as well as for school and basic web surfing and video streaming.

I recently just upgraded my 2007 Macbook to the new 13" Macbook Pro for that exact reason. I have been into video editing for a while however finally upgraded everything to HDTV quality and my Macbook couldn't handle it so I was using my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 ghz and it worked with no problems.

So, I purchased last week the 13" Macbook Pro i7 and tried it out last night for the first time. It blows my iMac out of the water in terms of speed and rendering on HD video. I would highly recommend the i7 because it has about a 15% boost in performance via different benchmarks. It will really show in rendering time among many other areas.

The biggest issue is the screen space, but like you, I bought it as a secondary machine and I plan on getting a thunderbolt display adapter and hooking it up to a bigger screen at home and maybe even using it over my iMac. The speed is that much nicer.

FYI...I use FCP for all my editing.

Hey Jedi thanks for the reply! I may actually just bump up the 13" to the i7. Yea since I won't be primarly editing on this machine I think I can just suck it up and stick with the 13".

save yourself $300 from buying the i7 and get an SSD ($200) and 16GB ram ($100). Much better way to spend your money IMO. Plus I'm certain you'll much larger gain in rendering w/ the latter two.

The MCP will grow with your needs. It will never be at a loss for power!

After visiting the Apple store, I think I was pretty much sold on the MBPR, so it looks like I will be ordering one in the next day or so, and wait and see what happens with the iMacs. :)
