Recently my 13mini’s battery has gone from 100 to 94% within a month. Now when I plug it into my Discovery for CarPlay it gives me a message every time that will continue charging once it cools off. It is warm in the hand but it didn’t do this in the past. Last year I had the same issue so Apple replaced my phone after doing diagnostics.

This seems to be a repeating issue. All I have running is Waze app while driving, Spotify at times but the playlist is downloaded, and that’s it. I even keep it in the shade. Has anyone else been experiencing this? I have AppleCare until October so if this is going to die on me then in need it to do so by then. Are there any diagnostics I can run?

You can extend your AppleCare+ when it expires, I literally just did this the other day on my 12 Pro. As far as diagnostics, call or chat Apple within a day or two of seeing that message and they can gather logs. The iPhone WON’T take a charge if it’s too hot, and to be fair it’s been HOT in Texas (where I assume you are based on your user name) so it’s quite possible that it’s expected behavior. But keep an eye on it!

With the current summer heat in so many places it can be tricky to diagnose. What’s your car salon temperature when you get in? Do you charge it with the cable or MagSafe when in your car? MagSafe will heat the iPhone more, the cable - it all depends on your charger’s power output.

I have a similar issue with my iPhone 12 mini, plugged into a USB socket in the car for wired CarPlay. It would charge, yet can stop at around 80%, saying it will continue once it cools down. I just thought it was heat related, as I remember it happening with my previous iPhone 7 and 11 as well.

12 and 13 mini battery & heat management is their weakest point, IMO, as they are both so crammed inside.

Sometimes, in these really hot days in Italy, I had got the same problem with my 14 Pro Max. Partially resolved by putting it in front of the air conditioning vent.

I was actually in Colorado driving back down to Texas. It was hot but I have AC and keep the phone in a little cubby.

Hot in the car for sure but I put the AC on max and change that. I was driving 18hrs and like you it would get to 80% and just stop saying it's thermal. The phone would be hot but I don't get why using carplay would be so intensive. Especially if using spotify but I ahve the playlists already downloaded. Feels like it's just overheating for no real reason at times.

Were you using any navigation apps as well? Some of them are quite energy hungry. You could check it in the Settings > Battery to see what apps were using most battery during your drive.

Also check your car charger power output, as anything higher than 10W would be heating the iPhone more, I guess.

Using GPS navigation apps uses a ton of processing power. That’s why your phone heats up so much when using Waze or Google Maps.
