I need a new machine for university
Portability isn't much of an issue as I always keep my computer on my desk

I am looking at the 2015 15 MacBook Pro,
The 13 non touchbar model or even the iMac.
The programmes I will run is mainly Microsoft office....but a lot of streaming as well..:

Get a 2015, but get the 13" model instead of 15".
This will give you portability.

Then, use the extra $$$ to get a 27" 4k display for your room.
LOTS of screen real estate to enjoy...

What are your needs for processing, playing, working, etc? If I'm just taking notes I'd go with the cheap MacBook Air with the current extra discount. While not a popular notion I subscribe to the "buy what you actually need" crowd and not the "buy whatever you want" crowd. In the end it saves a great deal of money and the money you save can be put towards more useful things.

The thing is it's going to be my main computer
A computer I watch videos etc...:
The MacBook Air is too thin and doesn't have an CD drive. The air is for people who want to take it everywhere with them.

Then I'd say a 2015 MBP 13" would probably be more than plenty and more affordable given the new MBPs.

Because CDs are dead media at this point. No current MacBook or iMac has a CD drive.

If your needs are strictly word processing and watching video, get a base MacBook and a nice monitor. That way you have portability for note taking in classes, and your desk setup otherwise. You don't need the power of a 15" MBP, or even a 13". So save the money and get a more suitable machine for your needs.

Hmm thanks for the advice
The MacBook is too small and only 8gb ram.
Thinking of getting the iMac
