Hey everybody. I figured I'd ask here before dealing with Apple direct.

I've got a late 2013 13" retina mbp and use it mostly with my 27" ASUS IPS display. I connect to the external display using thunderbolt to display port on the monitor and primarily use the laptop in clamshell mode. I didn't experience any problems unplugging the laptop from the display and then plugging it back in for the longest time. Recently I've started noticing that when I plug in the display port cable into either thunderbolt port, the monitor just does not seem to want to grab a signal... regardless of trying to use in clamshell mode or using the external display and laptop display at the same time. The laptop display blinks temporarily like it's trying to adjust for the change in display configurations, but normally doesn't output to the monitor.

Once in a great while after multiple attempts I finally get the external display to come up, but it's usually a hassle and difficult to determine what exactly the reason is that it started to work. The problem seems to be the same regardless of which TB output I use on the mbp. Needless to say, I'm hesitant to unplug the laptop from the monitor once I've got it working since I have no idea how long it'll take to get it working again if I unplug.

Anybody have any thoughts as to if it could be something strange with the onboard video output? Maybe just a bad display port > thunderbolt cable? Thunderbolt ports? Monitor itself?

Thanks for any advice!
