Recently got a Crucial M4 512GB SSD, which I've installed in my MBP without a problem. I decided to use the Seagate 500GB 7200rpm hard disk that came with the MBP as an external so put into a cheap enclosure I had lying around.

The problem is when I plug it into a USB port I get the message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."

When I click "Initialize", it opens up Disk Utility and the drive is visible with the following information:

Disk Description: ST950042 0ASG Media
Total Capacity: 500.11 GB (500,107,861,504 Bytes)
Connection Bus: USB
Write Status: Read/Write
Connection Type: External
S.M.A.R.T. Status: Not Supported
Partition Map Scheme: Master Boot Record

There is also a partition called disk1s1. The drive appears to be formatted in FAT and as Master Boot Record for some reason even though it was being used in my MBP until yesterday.

I've tried reformatting it by going to "Partition" and selecting OS Extended Journaled and GUID Partition Table under "Options". Each time it gets to approximately 50% before hanging and then I have to quit disk utility. I've also tried using terminal to format it without any luck.

In desperation I've also tried to use DiskWarrior to see if the drive was corrupted and got several errors 2351, 2155 among others when trying to rebuild the directory.

I have run out of ideas, so would appreciate any help. I'm thinking it might be the cheap enclosure but then why does the drive show up in disk utility? Also if I select Apple Partition Map when partitioning, the drive appears to be formatted without a problem and a pop up box appears asking me if I want to use the drive for Time Machine

Sorry for the long post, but I figured the more info the better ;)
