2nd hard drive: 750gb Momentus XT 7200rpm or 1tb Scorpio Blue 5400rpm

Hi all,

I think its about time for me to replace my stock hard drive with a larger/faster disk. I am planning to keep the same general setup: OSX on an ssd, windows, music, games, and occasional video editing off the HDD I've narrowed it down to these two which happen to be the same price this weekend.

750GB Segate Momentus 7200rpm XT
1TB WD Scorpio Blue 5400rpm

might as well get a power-efficient 5400rpm HDD for storage if you boot from an SSD.

So it turns out that the 2nd gen 750gb momentus xt is only $5 more than the scorpio blue this weekend on newegg... has anyone had issues with the new XTs?

I agree. But the Momentus XT is still pretty quick. There is a noticeable difference between an Momentus XT and a Scorpio Blue Drive. If its space you are looking for go for the Western Digital if you´re looking for speed, then I suggest you get the Seagate. Up until now not a single problem whatsoever and the HD is fast.

Only 1 drawback, it uses a lot more energy than my previous 5400rpm HD so don´t expect better battery life.

If you have an SSD for a boot drive, perhaps energy efficiency is more import an than quickness.

If speed is your concern then any 7200rpm drive would be just as good as XT except.... cheaper.

XT boosts performance by caching files so unless you watch the same dozen movies over and over or something you won't see a performance boost.

I would get the 1tb. Longer battery and more storage ftw.

Since you already have an SSD I would also say get the 1TB drive, you'll get more storage space and its more power efficient the SSD cache will likely be wasted if your just using it for storage.

Go for the Scorpio. The Momentus XT really boosts performance because it can cache your startup/system files and your applications, but if those are being stored on an SSD anyway it's unlikely you'd notice a major boost in performance.

Agreed. Use a regular hard drive if you are booting from an SSD. I prefer WD Scorpio drives. Personally, I use the second drive for video so I went with the 750GB WD Scorpio Black which is blazing fast for a 2.5" hard drive. I also have the latest 1TB WD Scorpio Blue in a 2011 Mac mini for HTPC. It's much quieter and cooler than the 750GB WD Scorpio Black, but not much slower.
