I've used iMovie since the '08 version all the way through the '11 version. My primary camera is a Sony DCR-SR100 Handycam. I take videos on a weekly basis and import them into iMovie for editing and exporting.
Recently, iMovie stopped importing the audio part of my videos which I noticed on Fathers Day (2012). I was clueless as to why and thus set forth trying to figure it out.
Video & audio from my iPhone 4S worked just fine in iMovie. Importing the same video from the Sony to my older 2009 24" iMac (iMovie 9.0.4) worked fine, but not on my newer 2010 27" iMac (iMovie 9.0.6).
At first, I thought it was the USB cable, so I bought a brand new one from MonoPrice and when I tried it, it didn't work. I also tried using different USB ports on the iMac with both cables; nothing worked.
I deleted iMovie then reinstalled it, ran Software Update to get the latest version (9.0.6, which is what it was when I deleted it) and tried to import again. No dice, still missing the audio.
Then I decided to FULLY DELETE the program, thank you GGJstudios. Then I restarted the iMac and tried again. Still no audio.
Next I deleted the program, again. Then I installed the 9.0.4 update from the Apple downloads page. I tried to import the same video a third time and voila, it worked! I got the video & audio back finally.
Since the Sony DCR-SR100 uses MPEG-2, and most Apple products don't support it, I figure that Apple changed something in the 9.0.6 update which broke compatibility with MPEG-2 files.
I'm posting this for anyone else with a similar Sony camera or is trying to use MPEG-2 files with iMovie 9.0.6 and finding it's not working. Just downgrade to the 9.0.4 version and you should be fine.
I've also since sent in a bug report to Apple at www.apple.com/feedback/imovie.html
Fix: The latest versions of iMovie fixes this (9.0.7 & 9.0.8)
