Im a noob when it comes do this so... will I have any problems hook up a 13 MBP with a 24in LCD with a resolution of 1920x1200. How about dual monitors?
Mini DisplayPort is the current digital standard on all current Macs to transfer video to an external display or TV. It has been introduced in 10/2008 with the release of the Unibody MacBook and MacBook Pros and has gradually been adopted on all other Macs.
MDP is capable of transmitting video, and since 2010, audio too. MDP is a miniaturised version of DisplayPort. It is also license free and can support resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600, which Mini DVI and Micro DVI are not able to do.
Then go to System Preferences > Displays >> Arrangement and see if MIRROR DISPLAYS is checked. If checked, the external display will be set to the lowest common resolution, which is 1280 x 800 in this case and it mirrors the MBP's internal display. If deselected, you can then choose the native resolution of the external display and you have a dual monitor setup, albeit with vey different monitor sizes (13" and 24").
