I looked around quite a bit before buying last week. PC World have a MACBook Pro with £200 off at the moment. In the end I decided that my first foray would be a basic macbook which I bought from the Apple Store 'refurbished'. Full 12 month warranty and cheaper than the resellers on ebay. So my advice is look at the Apple refurb ones first.
I ordered mine thursday and it arrived Friday morning. Perfect
It is my first MAC, boy, is it ever different from 'what i am used to' !!
I got my base model off Amazon.co.uk for 804 in early December (vs 899 rrp). Amazon's price seems to fluctuate with their stock level. The last one in stock goes for 870-ish, then they are out of stock for a week or so and refer you to a partner with an outrageously high price. Then they get a bunch more and start the price at 804 again. The whole cycle seems to take about a month.
Looking today the price is 837. Keep an eye on it for a week or two.
Can't recommend Amazon highly enough, I ordered at 1400 on one day and paid for overnight, it arrived about 1000 the following day. Quicker than driving to PCWorld (well, not really, but you get the idea ).
