I’m looking at upgrading from an 11.
On the Apple refurb store i can get a 256gb 13 pro for £759.

A new 14 goes for about £50 more (256) or less (128).
A new 128gb 15 goes for £799.

I consider apple refurb to essentially be like new (new battery and case) and I’m concerned 128gb could be a limitation though I’m not sure if it is.

I take a lot of photos and that’s making me think the 13pro is a good option as it has both optical zoom and macro, BUT my understanding is the camera module was substantially improved in the 14.

Any one got two cents to chip in here?

I’m not such a photo-taker, but I’ll contribute. I loved my 13PM. It was silver and so cool.

That said, I traded up to the 14PM in Space Black for only a couple of reasons:

1. I really wanted the Always-on-Display, and

2. I wanted a refresh, a shiny new device, because my screen had a lot of micro-scratches.

I know it’s not the input you’re looking for insofar as the camera is concerned, but I just wanted to put it out there that the 13PM is a fine iPhone.

the 14 Pro is actually the device I kind of really want because it has the newer camera, AND optical zoom, and most of the features added to the 15.
But you can't buy it from apple currently and I don't want a refurb from a 3rd party .. I keep waiting to see when they appear on the refurb store but so far no luck :)

I think the 13 Pro would suit you better. It has a dedicated 3x telephoto lens and also autofocus mode that enables macro photography - both of which are absent in the 15.

Most stores are offering the 15 for £749 at the moment. That would tip it for me for usb c and the new design, or you can use the discount to go 256 Gb.

My vote would be the 15. You get USB-C, latest design (inc. Dynamic Island), and the same camera system as the 15 Pro, just without the 3x Telephoto. However, for Zoom, you do effectively get a 2x "Optical" Zoom on the 15 because the 48MP gives a 24MP photo, so it crops in a "lossless" way if you stick with the default 24MP photo. So it's not that big of a loss IMO.

I would not get the 14. When the 14s came out, most ppl said the 14 (non-Pro) was a bad deal / value, because it was basically the 13. Whereas with the 15s, people are saying the 15 (non-Pro) is a great deal / value.

So to me, it comes down to 13 Pro Refurb vs 15, and I think 15 makes more sense.

Having owned the 11, 12P, 13P, and 14P, I vote for the 13 Pro. It’s a Pro phone so will still be a jump from the 11, it has the best battery life out of all phones I listed (from my experience and others anecdotes) and it just had this sense of stability when I was using it. It’s actually my favorite iPhone ever, with the 11 having that spot before it.

If you really want USB C, you may want to jump for a 15. Search up the articles on here and see what month Apple starting selling refurb 13P, and that could give you a sense of when the 14P will come to the Apple refurb store. I remember it being awhile though.

Those factors aside, I greatly vote for the 13 Pro. My girlfriend still uses a replacement of my old one, and it’s a really great, modern phone. She has zero desire to upgrade.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

As an owner of iPhone 14 Pro Max, the aperture [opening to light] of wide and ultrawide cameras of iPhone 14 Pro Max are smaller than what is on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max... However, because the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max have 48MP sensor [main camera] and Photonic Engine, that seems to have negated the advantage of aperture of iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, although I went from iPhone 7 Plus to iPhone 14 Pro Max so I do not have first hand experience comparing the two in terms of photo and video but just relying from what I have seen in YouTube videos...

Macro on iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max is better compared to iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max since you can get much closer to the subject... If you shoot in Cinematic mode, 13 Pro series has 1080p 30fps vs 14 Pro series up to 4K 30fps

Thanks everyone. It seems we've arrived at: the 13Pro is a great phone. So is the 15 ;)

I hadn't realised the 15 effectively has X2 optical zoom, that's a useful point.

15/15 Plus is like the 14 Pro/14 Pro Max except no telephoto/zoom lens but both have 48MP sensor for the main/wide angle camera...

In terms of overall hardware, there are more similarities and differences to be talked about...

I’m looking at upgrading from an 11.
On the Apple refurb store i can get a 256gb 13 pro for £759.

A new 14 goes for about £50 more (256) or less (128).

Firstly also look at reboxed.co I have now bought two phones from them, they are marked as pristine level and really are, or you can pay more for like new. If you are with Smarty they give you a discount too.
I got a 13 Pro last year, 128GB and I would say get the bigger storage, I say that as I downloaded COD Mobile in full and have about 43GB left! But if you use RAW then that will eat into your storage space. For me the cameras been ok, some shots great some are a bit washed out, I am in NO way a pro, just point and shoot.

But I needed a bigger screen for my eyes so picked up a 14 Pro Max this week, I can't uses the camera a whole lot but I did upgrade to 256GB storage. I wanted Dynamic Island too.

Thanks. The only reason I’ve not looked at other refurb sellers is that Apple specifically say you get a brand new battery and that seems to be the bit that goes on iPhone.. plus the warranty. People selling with “battery at least 80%” doesn’t give me a lot of confidence

True, but the 13 Pro I got came with 100% battery and even had Apple Care till December just gone, and the 14 Pro Max has 98%. Plus you have a 30 day trial period so can always send it back for a refund.
I never heard of them but I'm with Smarty and noticed in their app a link to buy handsets with a Smarty discount, it was £50 at the time, so took the plunge.

Either way I have to say the iPhone 13 and up are solid devices, really are. Performance wise day to day you won't notice much difference I'd say. Even my old XR is still more than usable.

For me though it'll be refurb from now on, not paying Apples silly retail prices. I mean my refurb 14 Pro Max 256GB cost £50 less then my 128GB XR did new!

I just bought a 14 Pro 128 refurb ($140 off from Apple direct) for my wife.

She wants better camera capabilities than her 2020 SE (finally giving up the on-screen button!) and does not need the 15 extras at such a premium price.

Wish it was USB-C but but we have so many Lightning cables that it is not a show stopper.

I noticed recently that the 14/14Pro are available refurb in the UK. I'm just trying to get the courage together to buy one because it is still by far the most I'll ever have spent on a phone. At only £90 more than the 13Pro the 14Pro seems the right option though I wish some 128Gb versions of the regular Pro would come in - 128ProMax and 256Pro are the same price, so 128GB Pro would save me £100.
