I stayed up til 2 a.m. central for the preorder. Could not get order thru, apparently to the number of people on line. I then got up early and ordered at 7 a.m. My acknowlegment I got back says 14-21 days. I assume this really means 14-21 days? Anyone receive this message in past and then receive on the first day?

It's called expectations management. If they deliver on the 14th, you will be delighted. If they take 21 days, well, they told you so...
I ordered via AT&T at about 5:30 and never say the 14-21 day shipping thing. Mine always say BY the 14th.
I hate to say it but orders that went through at 7am might be waiting till AT&T replenishes stock. I am sure that AT&T has only a finite number of units on hand.
What does your status show. It should show In Process and waiting for shipping. It should not show 14-21 days for shipping. Sorry

Mine originally showed 14-21 days. Now it doesn't show any date. Just says "In Process". Preordered 10/7 ~5:30am EST
Mine says in progress, pending shipment. The order status page says "Pre-ordered devices will ship on or around Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011."

I ordered my iPhone at approximately 12:45 PST when ATT opened up their preorder page. I received 2 emails, both of which stated I would receive the phone on the 14th. No 14 to 21 day email.
