14.4 iPhone unlocking with mask w/o settings option

My friend has an iPhone 12 Pro Max and a series 0 Apple Watch.

Today he noticed that his iPhone was unlocking with a mask on but he’s running iOS 14.4 and his watch doesn’t even run the new watchOS and doesn’t get a haptic notification when it unlocks (like mine does)

Has this happened to anyone else?

He doesn’t even have the option to unlock with a mask in settings so we’re confused.

Does your friend have really short hair or is he bald? You might think I am joking but my friends iPhone also started to unlock after 1+ month. I think his phone learned his face and being bald gave it more room to scan. At least that is my interpretation haha because it doesn’t work when he also wears a beanie
