I thought we could change our HomePods to play Spotify with this update, what happened?

In beta people were saying you could choose Spotify to play on HomePod. Siri says that app is not supported.

Spotify hasn't been added to HomePod.
Apple has opened it up to third parties, but the only one that's been added so far is pandora.

Without insider info, there's no way to tell if it's Apple, Spotify, or both that's dragging their feet.

This is just a guess on my part, but it could also be Spotify wanting to add Spotify connect, and apple not wanting to allow that.

Gotcha. Yeah, some were saying the capability was in the BETA version, but the full release has no way to trigger it. I hate Apple Music... never works. Having Siri control it is painful to say the least as well. It is a love/hate with me and Apple.

that feature did get added on the phone, maybe that's where you saw Spotify mentioned.

it might have been added on the HomePod, but it won't do much, since the only 2 services are apple and pandora right now.

I really hope they open it up to spotify connect.
The AirPods already allow it so hope they add it soon.
they do?

Siri on the phone can control the Spotify app on the phone, so by default the AirPods can also. that's not Spotify connect.

as of now there's no Spotify "app" on the HomePod to allow local playback, so there's nothing for siri to control.
I know it's not a traditional app, but there must be a process running on the HomePod to allow it.

Spotify connect is where the Spotify app can connect to and control other devices on your network. I have sonos speakers and an echo dot, and when you click the devices screen in the the Spotify app, in addition to the "airplay and bluetooth" option, those speakers are listed. If you select it that way, you control the Spotify player on that remote device, instead of sending audio to if from your phone over airplay.
It's similar to how you can either send audio to the HomePod via airplay, or connect to it, and the phone just acts as a remote for the player in the HomePod.

Thanks for the explanation. I must have got confused with all this different terminology.
I use sonos speakers at home as well and prefer using the spotify app like you do above instead of sonos's app.
I wanted a mini HomePod to go in the office, but am hesitant because of the lack of spotify connect and will most probably wait for a sale to pick up a sonos one.

Is spotify everywhere different to spotify connect then as it lists the AirPods as a supported device?

AirPods are technically supported, but it's a little bit of a stretch.

you can control the Spotify app on the phone using siri. As a result, any headphones that can trigger siri can also control Spotify. Since AirPods can trigger siri on the phone, it means you can control Spotify from your AirPods. By that definition, no name $5.99 wired earbuds with a microphone are also supported.

My HomePod has not received the update to 14.5. What am I missing here? I do not allow my devices to update the OS automatically. When I go into the Home app on my iPhone and go to my HomePod, it does not show an update available, and is currently on 14.4.

**Edit:

Nevermind, I just opened it again and the update was there, and is now downloading!
