Hey guys

I picked up a 133Ghz 14 inch Ibook off Ebay and when I plugged it in NOTHING.. No startup chime no screen nothing. Any ideas what may be wrong?

Thanks

No power. Start by diagnosing power. I have an 18 year old iBook, the battery still has a bit of juice left. The power adapter is flaky. If the battery was dead and the power adapter was totally not working, it would have the symptoms you are describing, although it could be something else. Start with power.

The adapter I'm using is from a 12 inch Ibook could that be the problem?

Do you see a green, amber or red light on the adapter plug?

1. Remove the battery, if the power light remains green, try powering on.

2. If no life, next try removing the AirPort Extreme card. These can occasionally short out internally and cause no power issues.

3. Next, begin to dismantle. Remove the bottom case and top case with keyboard to unplug the power button from the logic board. Try jumping the power on pins on logic board with a screw driver to rule out a power button failure.

4. If it still doesn’t power on, continue to dismantle to strip the logic board right down to minimal configuration, disconnecting the HDD, OD, display, etc.

5. Leave the DC In and fan connected and try jumping power on pins again. If the fan spins at this point work back to isolate the failed component.

6. If no power, you’ll want to test a different DC in board. You can remove just the bottom case on your 12” iBook to pull out the DC in board to test in the 14. The connection and voltage should be the same, I believe it’s just a different length cable to the logic board.

7. If still no signs of life, signs point to logic board failure. Replace the logic board.

While the machine is open, look for signs of liquid damage. This is often the culprit behind no power issues and eBay sellers will rarely divulge this information.

Wow, that is one of a checklist!
Great!

There is a light on the adapter plug shown on the picture ...
I don''t fully understand that adapter-light and battery in/out stuff :
battery in: amber=charging; green=fully charged
battery out: green=system powered by charger-cable
Does a green adapter-light while battery is out show, that the circuit DC-in-board > LogicBoard is ok?
And when does the adapter-light gets red?
So, IF the battery is in and loading and adapter shows amber-light (then going green after battery fully loaded) it would mean, DC-in-board is ok and the circuit DC-board > cable > LogicBoard-power-in > LogicBoard-To-Battery-in/out is ok.
If adapter shows green light with battery-out and then switches to amber light, would it also mean, that that loading circuit is ok?

So does the battery helds charge or is even charging?

If RAM would be the problem, there would be the beeping on trying to boot.
If the HDD would be defective, at least the screen would come up showing that missing-drive symbol.

Huuh, it seems, that might turn out to be looking for the needle in the needle-stack ...

hey guys

when I plug the adapter in it initially shows a green light then turns amber for a few moments then goes back to green. Then a few moments later goes amber again!

I tried removing the airport card and the memory still nothing. removing the battery the adapter light stays green but still nothing from the computer. It was a parts machine on ebay the listing said they didn't have a power cord so they couldn't test it. I hoped all I had to do was plug it in but Oh well. only cost $30
