Greetings. I want to get the 14” MacBook Pro. But most of the time, it will be hooked up to a dock. (I’m considering the OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock but am open to others). It will be connected to the usual peripherals, plus a 27” LED Display, and an RME Fireface UCX.

I’m currently running a 2018 MBP with a similar setup. i have two issues:

if I reboot, I have to manually unplug and re-plug the RME interface to get it recognized. They tell me it’s a problem with the USB chipset. Ive tried with the dock and manually connected and there seems to be no difference.

Also sometimes it hangs on sleep / loses connected hard drives.

do the M1s perform better on these fronts?

Just some thoughts...

You might also check the forum "Gearspace.com" -- it's where the audio guys hang out.

I looked up the specs for the RME Fireface.
Nice unit.
However...
It's got USB2 and firewire400.

I'm thinking that it might actually work better with the Mac IF you connected via firewire (instead of USB). Less latency, etc.
You would want the interface plugged DIRECTLY into a tbolt port on the MBP.

Of course, that would mean the proper cabling/adapters.
You would need:
- Apple thunderbolt3-to-thunderbolt2 adapter
and
- Apple thunderbolt2-to-firewire800 adapter
and
- Firewire800-to-firewire400 cable.

Instead of buying the 2 adapters "new", I'd take a chance on finding either slightly used or "new-old stock" items on ebay. Wouldn't cost too much that way.

Again, just some thoughts...
