So I'm looking to upgrade from my 2016 13" MBP. My daily use includes typical web surfing, word/excel, and media consumption. I do like gaming but I've written it off since moving to MacOS full time. I'm also learning programming and would like to have a system for iOS (Xcode runs like crap on my current laptop) and web development at a minimum.

Maybe these use cases point to the M1 Air being a better option but I really like some of the extra features of the new MBP (the new display, mag safe, and extra ports such as HDMI). In addition, I hate buying products that are already a year into their life cycle already given how they hardly ever discount prices until the next gen product in that line is released.

All of that said, I'm trying to decide how to build the 14" MBP. I'm not sure if I'll ever utilize the the extra CPU/GPU cores given I'm not doing video work, so if the 8 core CPU/14 core GPU good enough for my purposes including development? I'm also wondering about 16 gb vs 32 gb of RAM. I normally like to upgrade RAM because I like to keep my computers for 4-5 years minimum, but the $400 upgrade is a bit ridiuclous. My 2016 MBP has 16 gb of ram and it's slow, so I'm concerned I'll run into the same issue if I only stick to 16 gb in this one.

Anyways, any recommendations/advice are welcome esp. from people who do development work on their Macs (iOS/Android/front end web). Given I'm just learning, I'm not sure exactly how powerful of a system I need to not run into issues once I get to working with bigger projects.

Thanks.
