I've had around 3 kernel panics in the last hour on the rMBP and I'm hoping some of you guys can help me find out what may be causing it. I have a hunch it may be gfxcard status. They have all happend while watching a youtube video in one google chrome window and browsing forums on the other. No other apps were open except for bettersnaptool, SwitchresX and gfxcardStatus.

Here is the most recent log:

Have you specifically enabled GPU compositing in chrome://flags? If so, you need to change that to default, along with probably all other GPU-related flags on the page. There's a bug in in Chrome/Flash that seems to be causing a resource leak that's resulting in the integrated GPU bloating and running out of graphics memory, at which point the kernel panics.

More on that here at Google's Chrome releases blog.

There's no need to switch to Safari, just make sure you're on the beta or dev channel of Chrome (the beta is now at version 21 and should have this fix integrated; dev channel is 22 now). It kinda sucks, though, because the performance of scrolling, etc. is now just as poor as Safari on Lion—which is to say, often a little bit choppy. Anyway, make sure you're on the right channel and make sure you don't have any GPU stuff turned on in flags, as this will override the temporary 'fix' Google has issued of simply disabling GPU acceleration for the system.

Edit: also check out this chromium issue page to track the problem directly.

I haven't enabled the GPU compositing however I am running the beta of chrome Version 21.0.1180.49 beta. I'll try to enable the GPU compositing

Either use gfxstatus and force discrete gpu all the time, or dump Chrome. Its a known issue.

DON'T enable GPU compositing. This is precisely what causes the kernel panics. There may be another setting in your configuration that is messing you up, so it might be a good idea to dump your profile (~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome) to your desktop and restart Chrome. This will give you a vanilla setup and you shouldn't see any panics after that. There is no need to force GPU only, although that will certainly also work, at some huge expense to your battery life.

Or you can just ditch Chrome for awhile as previously suggested. That's certainly the easy way out. All I can tell you is that I use chrome all day, every day on my MBPR (I am on Chrome 22 dev), and I have no issues with kernel panics after setting "GPU Compositing" and all other GPU-related flags to default/disabled. Also FWIW, there is no telling how long this will take to fix. It sounds like it's an Apple/Intel driver issue, so I'm not sure the Chromium developers are even actively working on it beyond blacklisting the HD 4000-based Macs—probably waiting on an upstream fix.

My bad read your last post wrong, thanks for all the help I've now disabled the GPU compositing and hopefully that will end the kernel panics. If not I guess I can bear safari for a while :p

I had a kernel panic on my rMBP today. Been having issues with freezing because of an external hard drive. However, this occurred with no external connected:

Any ideas?

It still kind of looks like the root cause may be a USB/Thunderbolt driver bug. You should make sure this is reported to Apple.

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

Set the feedback type to "bug report" and include your system details, that stack trace, and a brief description of the external drive you were trying to use before you got the panic. Make sure that you mention that it didn't happen WHILE you had it connected, but I bet it might still be related to your problem. It looks like it's either that or the system power management. But I bet you they're related.

Apple looks like they've mentioned USB/Thunderbolt fixes in the upcoming 10.8.1 developer seed, so hopefully when that arrives your issue will be resolved. The sooner you report it, the better your chances it will get reviewed and fixed in the next release.
