Yesterday, Apple has decided to block my account permanently. Why? Because I am (was) using US iTunes store from outside the US. Apparently, it's written on the terms & condition when you first sign up for iTunes account.

I used to live in the US until several months ago. Bought all my iDevices from the US and of course open my account in US store. I moved to Indonesia a few months ago and I know that US iTunes store doesn't accept foreign CC, therefore, I bought gift cards before I left. If I ran out, my friends can easily buy some for me.

A few days ago, I had a problem purchasing an app. Said that I had to verify payment method and contact iTunes support. I've encountered the same problem before and I even told the rep. that I'm using gift card and I'm not living in the US, the problem was resolved quickly. This time, the iTunes rep. replied back with a message that I'm in violation of the rule and there is nothing they can do. I get to keep all my purchases, but won't receive any new update on them. If I want to download from iTunes store, I have to purchase from Indonesia's iTunes store. There is no other option. It's a very logical answer of course, but have you SEEN what's in Indonesia's iTunes store? NOTHING! Not even a single song available. I can find Indonesian songs on US store, but not in Indonesia store. That's how pathetic it is. Apps are very limited, only a few are useful/interesting, the rest are garbage. I'm more than willing to switch location and use a credit card instead, if only they have things to offer me.

I don't like jailbreaking my devices. Not because I have some superiority complex of paying for what I get, because trust me, I'm far from that. I just don't like the hassle that comes with JB. I did JB my phones before and problems often occur when I sync it to my computer and then I'll have to do a restore. Besides, I like updating my phone and apps. I'm a bit OCD with when I see the little red number telling me that I have an update

I realise that I'm at fault for not reading the terms, but lets be honest here, who reads that thing??

I know that Indonesia's problem with piracy must be a huge blow to apple sales, so I guess I understand why the store is so limited. But there are also many people here who are willing to pay you and you're not letting them. I was about to ask my friend in the US to help me buy another $100 worth of gift cards, but now my account has been blocked permanently. Why? Because I'm willing to PAY for my downloads. I've invested thousands of dollars in iTunes store alone and this is the thanks I get. So you're welcome, apple. I'll be taking my apps needs somewhere else where it's FREE.

I'm one of the people here who can't wait for the iPhone 5. But after this, take your time, apple. I'm in no hurry to get it.

You can always get an android phone..

and...

Now you have REASON to jailbreak!

While I don't agree that Apple should have done this, you knew what you were getting into by only using gift cards. It us your responsibility to read the agreements (which I don't even do, but should probably start doing)

Good luck, but Android is always an option ;)

Meh, Android is still a little behind in the App department.

lol no. Android has the same number of apps now. And all the main apps on my iPhone are available on my android phone.

I was going to say something along the same lines. I made a list of all my most used/important apps on my iPhone and nearly all of them are available for Android and those that are not have good alternatives. For my part I will have no apps related problems when making the switch.

When something bad happens, just think positive...those little red numbers for updates that make you all OCD, well they will never show up again:D:D

Seriously I think you got a bad deal. But why do you live in Indonesia? Every time I turn around, there is someone there trying to buy my stuff on eBay. And to think, they can't even get good apps

It shouldn't matter whether I was using a credit card or gift card. Apple provide those gift cards as one of the payment option. I'm still a paying customer. The problem is because I'm accessing US iTunes service from outside the US. They "use technologies to verify your compliance".

Apple definitely stated it in their agreement (which majority of us never bother to read) and I can't blame them. I'm just upset that they're blocking non-US customers and only provide a half-ass service to the rest of apple users. There are millions of iTunes users in the US alone. I'm sure I'm not the only one with the same problem.

Because no one gets to choose where they are born and become citizens

he lived in USA and moved there.

I don't understand why there would be different stores and apps. I mean, yeah you don't need my local banks app in Indonesia, but games and music should be added to all stores for sales...but wtf do I know

Lol. Yes, I guess I won't have to see the little red circle.

Ahh... I guess should have said clearly. I'm an Indonesian citizen, although I spent more than half my life living overseas. I just moved back to Indonesia January this year :D

If I were you, I won't sell anything to Indonesia buyers on ebay. Lol. I know I'm bad mouthing my own countrymen, but seriously, for your own protection, don't. The mail system for international shipping is also very corrupted. So even if they're legit, your item may never reach the buyers.

There are lots of iPhone users here though. Although all 90% of them are jailbroken. I guess I'll be joining them soon

That seems odd to me. So if you were traveling, you wouldn't be able to update apps? I had never considered that. What if you come back to the US; will they reopen your account? And can you update already previously purchased apps through the Indonesian store, assuming those apps are in the Indonesian store?

It says on the iTunes store agreement that:

"The iTunes Service is available to you only in the United States, its territories, and possessions. You agree not to use or attempt to use the iTunes Service from outside these locations. Apple may use technologies to verify your compliance."

My guess is, if you're only traveling for a while, they won't block you. But I've been away from US since January. So.. I guess they know? I was still able to purchase and update my apps until a few days ago.
The reply from the iTunes rep. is just "nothing we can do" and to "open a new iTunes account".

No. According to the iTunes rep., now that my account is blocked, I can't update the previously installed apps.
I emailed apple a couple weeks ago regarding my gift card balance (when everything was still working) and she told me that I can switch country. I will have to download all purchased content (music/video/apps) within 30 days. BUT things like apps will not receive further update.

Weird. I guess that South Park episode was spot on.

I'm not sure if you're dealing with US support, but if you are, to get to a Tier 2 iTunes specialist, you have to call in to AppleCare and speak to any group related to your product (Mac, iPhone, etc), then tell them you were unable to reach a resolution after having already contacted iTunes Support. That agent will then chat with iTunes Store Tier 2 support on your behalf while you're on the phone. If they tell you you need to pay $29 for phone support (which they might even for iTunes Store issues), ask to speak to a senior advisor.

Can I call for support from AppleCare even though I don't have one?
According to the TOA, I am in violation of one of their rules... but I know sometimes nagging at them would resolve the problem :D

I'll see what I can do to make international call to apple support there.
Thanks for your input. Certainly very helpful. :)

Btw, which South Park ep.? LOL. I'm a fan of South Park, but haven't been able to download any of the new season (see what you did there, apple??)

This seems so wrong. I don't know why the support guy couldn't just give you a warning. Does anybody actually read the TOS?

Indonesians would have be one of the nicest bunch of people I've ever met. Poor, but very friendly, happy and welcoming. Not a fan of the govt though - they deported me once for some BS reason.

Season 15, episode 1. They have all the episodes free on:

http://www.southparkstudios.com (legal site, in case a mod is worried)

Not sure if it will stream in Indonesia, though.

And yes, you can call AppleCare even if you don't have AppleCare. AppleCare is both the name of the group of people you call and the support plan. Still, they may tell you that you need to buy AppleCare (the plan) or pay $29 for support. Just say it's an iTunes Store question and if they still want to charge you, ask to speak to a supervisor.

Good luck.

Just because the main apps YOU need are on both iOS and Android doesn't mean there are the same number. In fact, Android is bereft of the kind of quality found on the App Store, especially in the gaming department.

And even when the top games do come to Android, like in the case of Horn the other day, people are debating and arguing because they find that their phone or tablet isn't supported. The S2 doesn't support Horn despite only recently being replaced, yet the two year old iPhone 4 and 18 month old iPad 2 do.

1. Actually the fact is both stores have circa 600k apps.
2. Quality is very subjective.

You gotta read the terms and conditions. See South Park Season 15 Episode 1. Steve Jobs through Tim Cook will turn you into the Human CentiPAD.
