1440p External Monitor + HiDpi

I have a early 2013 15" rMBP. Is it possible to use a resolution of 1920x1080p HiDpi on a 2560x1440 external monitor? I have tried using SwitchResX to achieve this but can't seem to get it to work correctly. It either ends up looking blurry or there are black bars on the left and right sides. I know there are posts about this on here but most of them are old and outdated. Does anybody do this or know how to do this? Any help/guidance would be really appreciated. Thanks a lot!
