I'm going to try and articulate this the best that I can. The way that I thought the feature would work is actually pretty simple - if you flagged an email on your device, webmail, or desktop client, then the mail would show up in the Flagged box on iOS regardless of what folder it is in (the same way that any mail client works, really).

In Gmail, "flags" = "stars". In Exchange, "flags" = "for followup"

iOS 5:
  • Flagging mail in Exchange = marked for followup in exchange
  • Flagging mail in IMAP (Gmail) = starred on gmail
  • No aggregation of flagged messages in iOS. You could access the "starred" folder in gmail, however

iOS 6:
  • Flagging mail in Exchange = flagging in exchange, only shows in flagged box in iOS if the message is in Inbox
  • Flagging mail in IMAP (Gmail) = starred on gmail, only shows in flagged box in iOS if the message is in Inbox

So basically this feature is worthless if you move mail into folders that are not the inbox (this is extremely common among business users. Most of us do not let everything simply flow into our inbox and leave it there for eternity. We move it to folders to stay organized). Here's how it should work:

  • Mail comes in
  • I flag mail
  • I may or may not move mail to non-inbox folder ("family" for example)
  • Regardless, mail shows up in "Flagged" in iOS

Is this really that hard, Apple?

Haven't had time to download 6 yet. Are you saying that if I flag a email and then move it to a folder. It won't show up in the flagged folder anymore, basic,y removing the flag since I moved it from the inbox.

It doesn't remove the flag from the message, but it will not show up in the "Flagged" inbox on iOS. So, yes.

If you are like me - currently using:
Google GMail for iOS
Google Chrome for iOS
Google Youtube for iOS
and still Google Maps for iOS.

Suggest you do the same :)

Yeah, that doesn't really solve the problem. The point is to aggregate all flagged/starred/followup messages into a single location for ease of use. Jumping out into multiple apps for each e-mail account will only complicate matters further.

What am I missing: I can't flag any email, even in my Gmail (Exchange) Inbox. The flag icon only pops up the options Mark As Unread or Cancel.

My office email account (Lotus Notes, Exchange) does show the Flag option in the pop up.

What the heck could be causing this? We use Mobile Iron to facilitate the access to office servers; is that complicating it? It all worked fine in 5.1. I only know enough IT to be dangerous; this kind of thing drives me crazy.

Anyone with actual expertise have any thoughts? Thanks. : /

Fixed!

This iOS6 bug appears on your Gmail Exchange account if you don't have the domain set in account settings.

1) Go to Settings
2) Select Mail, Contacts and Calendars
3) Select the GMail account
4) Select the account at the top of the screen (your GMail address)
5) The Domain field should contain either Google or gmail.com
(google.com will not work)
6) The Username field should contain your whole email address

:D

jetaero Did It!

Why the domain name was blank is beyond me, but the fix worked.

FYI, for an Exchange account with Gmail, the domain is just simply "google." (No quotes, of course.)
Thanks!
:)

P.S. Is text formatting not working here, or is that just me?

Actually...

This WILL make the Flag button appear in iOS6, but when you flag a message it won't "star it", thus it won't appear in as flagged (starred) in the "other clients", e.g. Apple Mail or even gmail web client.

I think the only way to make the message "starred" is to MOVE it to the Starred folder... no?

This is on the Exchange Account, BTW. The IMAP setup works fine.

WTH?
