help please with iphone 5 64gb miising 7gb right out of box Capacity

I brought an i phone 5 64 gb why did my phone right out of the box take 7gb. This is right out of the box it says Capacity 57.0 gb available 56.0 thats with out anything added including contacts and yet my friends only took 3.2. I asked apple any that didn't know was told by a sales person that maybe the 16 and 32 software files or compressed and not on the 64gb. Can somone please answer this as I don't get why my frind who got a 32 still had 28. something and mine was already minus 7gb. Thanks for any help is this

the amount of storage shorted by format is not a flat amount but a percentage. that and the os will add up to the amount you're "missing". if you don't follow, look up formatted size v size of drives on the net.

I do not get why a 64 gb goes down to 57 and a 32 gb only goes down 3 gb why they both have the excact same software. apple 1800 tech supports told me it does not seem right and to take it to the apple store as there might be something wrong Can anyone please say what their 64 gb said out of the box before installig anything, Thanks for the help

you always loose capacity when formatting a drive, the bigger the drive, the more you lose, unless apple advertise their capacitys as formatted, in which case please disregard =)

64gb is twice the capacity as 32 so it loses twice as much in formatting.

64GB = 64,000,000,000 bytes.
= 62,500,000 kilobytes
= 61,035 megabytes
= 59.6 gigabytes.

It's because kilo is a prefix only referring to a thousand of something but was incorrectly co-opted to refer to 1024 bytes due to computers using powers of two rather than multiples of ten. This means roughly 7% difference between the advertised capacity and the capacity the iPhone and Macs pre-Snow Leopard reports.

Then, you lose a little for the OS and all the resources that go along with it.
