Actually, it sort of is a retina display ...
At least at normal viewing distances it does. If you sit with your nose right up the screen then no, if you sit at a desk with the iMac about 9 to 12 inches from the edge then it probably qualifies as a retina display since retina in and of itself is a descriptive term and not a specification.
