I have a three week old 12" ibook. Last night I was watching an atom film with it upstairs in my house. I closed it and was headed downstairs with it under my arm; halfway down I stepped on something the kids had left on the stairs and I fell; head first; ending up on the main floor having gone around an L-bend in the staircase; I held onto the ibook at first but it flew out of my hand and hit the floor flat with a loud, loud SLAP. I would have bet big bucks that the LCD was broken.
I dusted myself off (nothing but a lot of bruises and some minor swelling). I really dreaded it, but I finally opened the ibook and it started right up. I have not yet run the hardware test CD, but I popped in a dvd and watched for a while; I played some itunes, and I surfed the web.
Morals: 1) ibooks are tough. 2) leave the light on when descending stairs, and 3) always hold the handrail.
