do you turn your macbook pro off or leave it on and just close the lid and let in sleep/hibernate?

I turn my MBP off when I install software that requires a restart. Otherwise it stays on for months at a time, besides sleeping when not in use.

I have my first MBP (first laptop in well over a decade) on the way (2011 15inch, apple refurb). Is there an up side or down side to leaving it on, or is it just personal preference?

Rarely ever turn it off. I've went months without my MBP every turning off.Only time it turns off is if the battery completely drains while on sleep in the rare occasion i forget to charge it.

No real effect on the battery or its life. It's just personal preference.

You guys who let your MBP sleep all the time - do you have the "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" option checked or unchecked?

Yo

I personally do not think you should be asking such belivilent questions. This type of blatant discrimination will not be tolerated in my household! I am Markus843 and if you disobey my brutal command I will smite you!

I turn mine off every night.

If I'm on the road and I know I'll be using it soon again, then I just close the lid ( sleep ), otherwise, I turn it off and turn it on again when I need it.

Startup times are a breeze since the introductions of SSDs...
I see no point in keeping it running when I don't need it.

Nope, I just sleep it. It gets turned off for updates and when the battery goes flat, which I also try to avoid.

I either keep my rMBP on all the time, or put it to sleep depending on what's occurring.

It may boot fast but it wakes up way faster with all Apps loaded, all windows arranged on different desktops, simply ready.

Mine is practically never off. I sometimes restart it because I have to but that means it is only off for split seconds.

I don't see any point in turning it off. Only messes up my window arrangement and saves hardly any power. Standby is about half a watt. Off is still more than zero unless you pull the plug. Not much difference.

Troll...

I rarely turn mine off, its basically always sleeping.

The odd time it is restarted is when updates need it/something dramatically crashes
