15" Late 2011 screen turns on then off after opening

When I open the lid on my laptop the screen turns on for about 2 seconds then goes black.

Can I fix this?

I have tried that and it's just the display. The keyboard backlight is still on.

The problem seems to have fixed itself overnight!

If it comes back I'll use your advice user418.

May be if you back up with time machine and reinstall lion it might fix the issue?

It came back and reseting the SMC didn't work.

@macbook pro i5, I don't have a external drive.
