15" MBP 2011 Strange External Display Behavior

Looking for a little advice with my 2.0 i7 MBP. I've tried hooking up to 2 different brand 1920X1080 native displays and each time I've encountered a similar problem. The resolution switches fine but the picture looks squished and doesn't fill the entire screen. I'm using a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter that works fine at 1080p with my 2008 uMacbook.

Here are a few pictures I took of the problem. Any experiences/ideas?
