I'm currently running a 13 inch MBP mid-2009 and thinking about a change.

I've upgraded my current machine to 8gb RAM, 500GB Fusion drive & 256GB SS (in the CD drive). Its 6 years old and has been an amazing investment.
However I'm looking for something new as I've been attempting to do some 3D design work & video editing and it really struggles in those areas. I also could do with slightly more screen real-estate. In all other tasks its still super fast.

It seems the answer is the new 2015 15inch rMBP; the one with the dGPU.

Its clearly great but the question that I keep coming back to it.... : Is this really worth the £2500 price tag (with !TB)?? Its just so expensive and so much more £££s than my current MBP was (£850) I have a hard time justifying this cost.

Can anyone, especially those who have the 15" model, enlighten me what other benefits there are over and above the obvious dGPU benefits and extra screen size & retina res that do actually justify the price tag?

The retina display itself, quad core CPU, decent iGPU, R9 M370X, the light weight, USB 3, 802.11ac wifi, the superfast PCIe SSD and also Thunderbolt 2 justify the cost.

Just get a 512GB variant and use an external drive.

Seconded.

And more importantly if you are working on a computer it is always worth the cost. Reclaim the tax and enjoy far increased productivity.

If it is just a toy then only you can justify the cost.
