15" MBP trackpad button not clicking

Very recently, I have had lots of trouble with using the button below the trackpad of my MBP. The machine is getting on a bit now as it's a first generation MBP (2.0GHz Core Duo, 100GB HD), but even so, I'm not sure why this will have happened. It feels like there's something underneath it which won't let it press properly. There's no "click" anymore and it's very awkward to use. I was wondering if anybody else had come across this issue before and what (if anything) they had done to fix it?

any information at all would be helpful
