Which would you opt for?
1. Base spec 15" 2011 with AppleCare
Or
2. Base spec 17" 2011 without AppleCare (& won't be buying it)

1, But only because I rely on my systems and usually buy applecare (which has always worked out for me). However, having owned a 13, 15 and 17 inch, I find the 17" to be most useful for my purposes.

How about this: Option 1 and then buy a larger monitor down the road.

Do keep in mind that your usage needs may make a difference and the Base 17 has better value in the price difference, as not only is the screen size larger, the resolution is better and it is the HR screen, the processor is faster, and the included graphics card is better than the base 15 as well. These differences are the reason that you need to address your usage patterns and needs when asking this question (for instance if you game or do lots of encoding and number crunching, all of these extras could make a difference greatly).

15" = lighter
17" = bigger screen

depends if you want to be more mobile or not

It depends on what you want to do…If I am an artist I would love to take my hands on large screen. If you just do simple basic task then 15" is enough for you….Some people said 17" notebook is a desktop pc replacement…So think about it.

Take a look at the stickies :p it has a break down table to help you decide depending on your needs...
