I just ‘dropped’ my 15 PM on my Sofa. Only from about 6”, so nothing disastrous-but, I noticed a kind of rattle. If I were to describe it, imagine the noise the old ‘slide to mute’ button on the side of an older phone was to make if it became a little loose and rattled.

If you then give the phone a little shake, you can hear something moving. Everything on the phone works fine-camera, speakers etc. It’s only about 3 weeks old, never been dropped etc.

Anyone else experience anything similar if they drop or shake? Not a habit I’m going to be getting into, but more of a concern that maybe it shouldn’t be doing that and may get worse?

Others have reported you can hear the lines moving in the camera. Just shook my 15 PM and I can even hear that. Just silent.

Is the image stabilization in the lenses. Mine makes a similar sound. Nothing to worry about. My iPhone 7 Plus did the same thing.

Unlike old phones, lenses don’t move anymore. Since iPhone 12, it’s the sensor that shifts. You shouldn’t hear anything. If you hear noise, something is wrong. If it were normal, Apple would have put out a support page to say that.

Is it a combination of two types of stabilization?
This is a quote from MacRumors article:

The Telephoto lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max features Apple's most advanced camera stabilization system yet, with a combination of optical image stabilization and an autofocus 3D sensor-shift module.

Phone Arena had a slightly better explanation:

Just checked my iPhone 12 mini and it rattles as well. It's not as noticeable because it's smaller and doesn't make such a thud when setting down.

Hello people,

Thank you for the replies. It’s strange because I don’t know if it’s a new sound or not. I don’t often have the case off, but it was baseless when I noticed last night.

As luck would have it, I’m off for a bit of pre-Christmas shopping today, but there’s an Apple Store in the city I’m going to, so I’m going to see if the display models do it too. Maybe I’ll ask a Genius first though 😂

I have AC+ so if there is an issue I’m not too concerned, it’s just the hassle: hopefully it is normal.

Just spoken to a guy in the Apple Store, his also rattles: it’s the Wide Angle lens, and is perfectly normal. Panic over! 😂
