It’s frustrating, because ios 17.0.3 fixed an issue I had with iPhone getting hot making phone calls, and now it appears iOS 17.1 introduced a new heat bug. Anyone else noticing this? Especially when using 5x lens.

I think the Photos app is the buggiest part of iOS 17 when in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. I’ve been having issues with is from the beginning. A lot of the time it won’t allow me to share pics via any app (Messages, Mail, AirDrop…) without restarting the iPhone.

I’ve wiped and reinstalled the os many times and even deleted/stopped using iCloud but to no avail.

The bugs don’t appear on my 14 Pro Max so it’s related to the new hardware with the new software.

Not sure when/if Apple will fix things - I’ve reported the bug.

I’ve resigned myself to the fact that it might just be a buggy year for my iPhone. If so I may reconsider my options come next upgrade cycle. Could be a year for a Pixel next time if the bugs are still bad in a year.

So what exact camera mode and setting do you use to reproduce the hot iPhone issue?

Seems to heat up when using all the cameras, I open the camera app like I’ve always done with iPhones, change lens, look at shots as I take them, but within 2 minutes after iOS 17.1 it starts heating up. Primarily I’m noticing it with the 5x lens

Can confirm, it insanely drains the battery and gets hot. I know this is a really power consuming thing but coming from the 11 Pro I wouldn’t expect this. Next to this, it gets hot - really hot and this being said at 10°C (50°F) outdoor temperature. I’m afraid to see this next month on vacation at 40°C (104°F).

Overall I’m not that happy with the 15 Pro especially knowing that I bought it as my daily driver for the next 5 years…

Yep, I feel the same. I suspect the main culprit is the terrible software running on it that is iOS 17.

I don’t think so. Had the 11 Pro running on 17 and everything was fine. I only upgrade all 4 years to the top and it’s the first time I’m disappointed. Tbh, USB-C and finally able to shoot videos in cinema mode and switching focus without post editing were the main reasons.

To clarify, I mean iOS 17 on the iPhone 15 pro max. I don’t think the developers have the OS optimized efficiently for the new hardware at all, frankly we’ve seen some pretty ridiculous bugs like image persistence, heat when doing simple tasks, and now again, heat when doing something that should not heat up the phone. I again opened camera app, used 5x lens, took 2 photos, reviewed the photos and went back to camera, 20 seconds, HOT and getting hotter by the second. If we tried to use it the way they advertised in the keynote to shoot a Hollywood movie, the battery wouldn’t last 30 minutes with this stupid bug.

My iPhone 15 PM was doing the same even on 17.0.3. Got it replaced at Genius Bar. Replacement phone is working fine. Get your 15 PM checked.

Hmm did you restore from backup or set up as new? I didn’t have the issue on 17.0.3, so hoping it’s a software.

I had the same problem with an iPhone 15 PRO purchased on launch day. When opening the camera app the phone became excessively hot. I returned it within the first 14 days and I have not bought another one. IOS 17.0.3 did not solve the overheating in my case

Same here, but had it before and after all the software updates we've had so far. Someone else I know also said something similar. I still think its software. Hope Apple addresses this...

I agree wholeheartedly. iOS 17 on the 15 Pro Max is currently a mini dumpster fire, the Photos/Camera functionality in particular from my perspective.

I got my 15 Pro Max replaced and still have random issues. I don’t think it’s faulty hardware…it’s the OS that need a lot of bugs fixed.

Currently had the Camera.app open for 10 minutes switching lens back and forth taking pictures with the 5x. My 15 Pro Max is cold as a cucumber without a case. Running latest public beta.

It's clearly not all phones.

It did get initially hotter than normal when making a phone call and using speakerphone under 17.0. Not to the point where I was concerned about being burned, but hotter than I felt normal.

Hopefully, they get a handle on it and soon.

This is good to hear. Did you originally restore from backup or set up as new?

Same with me for the camera! Even when I make a call, my phone stays cool. I did get my phone in October and it was manufactured in Sept. so I wonder if that makes a difference?

It was set up as new iPhone. Did 17.1 RC DFU restore, heating became worse. Then went back to 17.0.3, again using DFU. It was a bit better, but still getting hot, and dimming in sunlight pretty quickly. So, got it replaced.

that’s what happened to me today, used camera outside, quickly got hot and screen instantly dimmed, all within 15 seconds, never experienced anything like this with an iPhone. Didn’t have this issue until 17.1 so hoping that is the problem. Apples worst iPhone launch ever for me anyways.

May be it was not stressed adequately in 17.0.2. For me problem persisted in both 17.0.2 and 17.1 RC 1. Showed aggressive screen dimming running Antutu side by side with iPhone 14 PM(which maintained peak brightness throughout the test) to Apple Genius bar. They replaced phone, and the new phone at most gets slightly warm when taking snaps. That's it.

However, the previous iPhone had a pretty stellar battery capacity. Maintained 4496 mAh even after 26 charging cycle. Whereas the replaced one has lost 33mAh in just 5 charging cycles(4517 -> 4484 mAh).

Hoping someone that has put 17.2 beta on phone can let us know if it helps the issue, otherwise will start with a dfu no backup restore. iPhone looking at my camera roll, I’ve take several hundred photos, this was a non issue until 17.1, I think Apple is still signing 17.0.3 so downgrade may actually be possible.

same issue on 17.2 beta 1 (15P).
maybe not as bad as on 17.1 but its definitely VERY HOT after taking about 100 photos in 1-2 minutes.

Same issue here. I wonder if setting the Photo Mode to 12mp would help…
