Just bought a 13" rMBP but thinking the 15" offers better value, in part due to discrete NVDA GPU. Question is, when does the discrete GPU kick in? My normal workflow isn't particularly graphics intensive, primarily browsing and word processing, but I would like to use the scaled resolutions for more usable space.

Considering this usage scenario, would the discrete GPU really come into play if I'm not really gaming or doing anything graphics intensive?

The discrete GPU will power on when you do Skype video, when you open up Garage Band, iPhoto or iMovie.

Also Photoshop or 3D software like Lightwave will use the discrete graphic.

On all these occasions I think the Intel GPU could do the job with almost the same performance (except PS when CUDA is active).

If you want to play games, the 15" is the way to go. Otherwise you won't need it that often.
