I used to have a 13 MBP, and the screen real estate was too small, as well as the physical 13" display was a bit too small for looking at it for a long time.

since I switched to a 15" rMBP, I stopped using my 23" external monitor. Compared to the retina display, though it's not even set up at the maximum clarity (set at 1680 x 1050), image on the external looks blurry / pixelated.

so practically I ditched the external monitor.

am I the only one feeling this way?

I suppose it is a combination of the actual size, the pixel real-estate and dpi. I find the Apple 27" display I have to still be fine, but I agree that it is difficult to go back to a non-retina display. There are plenty of cheaper 23/4" displays out there that have 1080p, as well as lower quality colour and contrast - they may be good for gaming, but for anything else I think I would be moaning.

My 27inch external LG display is excellent for images and video, not so good for text which is more of an OS issue.

After using a rMPB for more than a year, just about any standard or mid consumer grade monitor looks poor... they looked good just a couple years ago. The retina has a tendency to spoil your eyes, especially text :)

I don't use mirroring, so I set the external display to its native resolution. Things look normal to me, at 2560x1440.

If I want to solely use my external display, I just put my 15" rMBP into clamshell mode and hook it up to my external display, keyboard and mouse.

Not me, since I have an older MBP, but my brother does graphic design for a living and is constantly on his 13" rMBP. He says its so good it just bugs him to use an external display.

I use my ACD with my 15" rMBP - the larger display makes working on it a pleasure. While the retina screen is beautiful size matters and the larger display makes my life easier
