Is it worth buying a second hand mid 2010 MacBook Pro ?

I'm buying a mid 2010 13" MacBook Pro with :
2.4ghz core2duo
6Gb ram
250gb hard drive
For $900
Is this a far deal ? It has the latest apple mountin lion software & 2011 Microsoft office pro installed.
Is there anything I should keep my eye out when I test it ?

RAM is worth a few dollars

I purchased that exact model from a pawn shop for $650 + tax in November of 2011.

RAM does not cost 1200 USD, it costs more like 20 to 40 USD.

Do not buy it for that price, and if you do, make sure to get MS Office license with it, otherwise you could pirate the software yourself and have the same legal rights.

Mac2Sell, Gazelle or eBay (Việt Nam, Türkiye, Česká republika, Hanguk) might be good price checkers.

Ok, I'll try get it cheaper & bail if its crap. Not sure about the spelling or anything, I'm Aussie , it's just a nicer way of swearing :)

If the seller is lying to that degree about the price, why would you maintain communication with them? One big flag to me is 6GB of memory. That was the unofficial limit on some of the much older machines. Also keep in mind the current version can be purchased refurbished in Australia for $1139. That is a 2012 with full warranty. When sellers lie to that degree, I would be concerned over whether they will neglect to mention something wrong with it. Given that you believed that (and I don't mean this to be rude), you should realize you aren't likely to catch anything wrong with it. Anyway if you still intend to buy used, I would buy a different one used.

Unless you receive some assistance do not purchase any used computer. Like the previous poster said (not to be rude) you just dont know about MacBook Pros. Either ask people or buy new!
 
For what it's worth, just yesterday I bought a mid 2010 MBP, paid $700 but this was a 15inch with the 2.4 processor, 8gb ram, and 320gb hard drive. Perhaps I got this at a discount because it was bought from a friend, but before he knew i was interested, he listed on craigslist for $900.

So long story short, not a great deal you're looking at.

Either they're telling you a lie so they can sell at higher price or git rpped off by previous owner.

With that money, you can buy a 17in MacBook Pro at that time.
Now you can buy a Retina model.

I say 500~700USD at its best.
 
Most people lie about what they bought their Macbook for when looking for used ones, at least what I seen.

But with enough searching you can find a good deal.
 
You can find 2006 15" models that a seller references paying $2200 to $2800.

Big deal, you may have paid that in 2006. Now a $1000 Air is better in ever way except screen size, resolution, lack of optical drive, and smaller storage. Likely has more memory and would have SSD though.

$400 to $700 for Core 2 Duo, regardless of age, I say.

I wouldn't say they are lying because it depends on when they purchased it. I purchased a Mid 2010 (Core i5, 320GB) MacBook Pro in December 2010 and I paid $2,312 (including 8GB memory upgrade). I could have easily spent $2,400 if I had purchased the Core i7. But the forum is right about the price they are charging you. $600 TOPS!!! I wish I could sell mine for that amount because it is in EXCELLENT CONDITION and runs the same way it did when i purchased it 6 years ago but...it's 6 years old and although it is great that Apple computers have resale value, much like a car, they depreciate the second they are sold.
