Whoa! Good catch Hero. I didn't see this on twitter. Thanks for sharing this. Definitely something we all need to keep an eye on.

This is precisely why I use four different tools to save my blobs (TU, RedSn0w, iSH****, and Cydia). Better to be safe than sorry! Plus it takes less than 10 minutes to quickly use all 4 tools to save backup copies of the blobs.

Any word yet about the other tools like TU or iSH****? I see that MuscleNerd said uploading blobs to Cydia means you should be ok. Does that mean both redsnow and TU saved them correctly?

Anyways, thanks for sharing this info.

Dang I assume this means blobs for A4 and below though, right?

Seeing as how re-restore method isn't out for iOS 6 on A5+

Still, sorta shocking.

I have 6.1.2 pulled on my iPhone 5, but only 6.1 on iPad 3 (even though it's on 6.1.2) and for family's devices (which is fine that's the version they're on and works perfect anyways).

Wow.
So any way to verify if the blobs we have are valid or not?
Only local stores copies are good and ones saved on Cydias server are not?

This is a problem--doesn't iSH**** have a "via Cydia" mode? I *think* my blobs in that tool were saved directly and not from Cydia, but it would be nice to know for sure whether or not they were valid. I sure as heck can't remember.

Gotta keep in mind, if a re-restore exploit never comes out for iOS 6 none of us have anything worry about blobs, legit or not, or no blobs.

Hopefully by the next major JB release they'll outline what's good and what's not? They did say to restore the firmware then pull blobs though, instead of OTA then pull blobs (ramdisk inconsistencies with that).

But maybe it's just now becoming news to them as they delve into the re-restore hunt process?

I'm sure Jay Freeman (saurik) will get a lot of flack for this on the internet.

"Poor" Jay :(

TU works the same way. I'd say if it's unchecked to pull from Cydia when you open the app for the first time since last pulling them, it was probably that way when you pulled them (was for me).

If it's checked, you could be SOL or could be alright.

A verification method would be nice, though. I agree.

As I read the Twitter exchange, those SHSH saved by iFaith are also incomplete despite what iH8Sn0w says (along with TinyUmbrella, iSH**** and Cydia saved SHSH). Only those saved using the fresh SHSH in Redsn0w are complete.

And any verifier would have to do a crypto check.

Ouch. That sucks. That's gonna screw up a large majority of people if a re-restore tool ever comes out. Thanks for posting this. Good to know even though that's pretty tough news.

The number of people using 3GS and iPhone 4 who waited to upgrade their firmware or who need to restore are really the only ones affected.

Good point. I always forget about those people. Sucks. That's unfortunately news for sure.

For the moment, if the devs develop a downgrade method which would need good blobs, then A5+ owners will be affected as well.

Always backup your blobs using multiple methods.

Wont matter much if iOS 7 releases right in the summer alongside the new 5S. 5S will most likely (?) be incompatible with previous versions.

Expected is the annoucement of iOS 7 during WWDC in june with a release in the fall.

It's confirmed by ih8sn0w, blobs for 6.x from Cydia are invalid, blobs saved by TU, iFaith or redsn0w are valid.

@olindamr 6.0 --> 6.1.2 blobs from Cydia are not valid. You will enter a DFU loop after restore.

@byAlmaz You can only do so if you grabbed blobs directly from Apple with an app like iFaith, TinyUmbrella (pointing to Apple), redsn0w.

I'm a bit confused right now. If these shsh blobs are incomplete, how are the iPhone 3GS and 4 users able to upgrade/downgrade to iOS 6.0-6.1.2 and not be stuck in a DFU loop? (I'm assuming DFU loop is when it won't boot up to the apple logo but iTunes detect it in recovery mode?)

A5+ devices cannot downgrade on 6.x anyway at the moment.

If you have only saved blobs for 6.1.2 with Cydia you might have incomplete blobs, which at the moment is only affecting 3GS and A4 devices as they can downgrade on 6.x

Yes, I'm understanding that part. But why have there not been any threads about being stuck in some sort of loop when restoring to say 6.1.2? I would assume this situation would be much more widespread(if that's the right word?).

Unless they all updated when 6.1 and 6.1.2 were still signed (I guess this would answer my question)

yes you answered your own question.

It only happens when you try to restore to an unsigned firmware.

This raises another question, why are the redsn0w saved shsh blobs around 20KB while the tiny umbrella ones are around 4-5KB? Even the shsh I have pre iOS 6 are 4-5KB for tiny umbrella saved shsh blobs
