Welcome to the world of PowerBook owners.

87 Celcius seems a bit high, though.

Yeah, 87°F isn't very hot at all. The Aluminum PowerBooks basically use their metal casings to help dissipate heat, thus the whole case becomes a sort of heat-sink for its components.

Yeah, PowerBooks get hot.
Real hot.

put it on a plate or something before you put it on your lap.
DON'T USE A PILLOW!!!!!!
The pillow will absorb the heat, pass it to the PB, make the PB hotter, make the pillow hotter, pass the heat to the PB, it's a whole cycle.

My PB burns my thighs sometimes. I bruise like a peach.

If you ask the genius bar what to do, they'll tell you to "go next door to The Limited and buy some damn jeans!"

...losers.

yeah putting it on ur lap's a bad idea, the fans run on maximum speed because it heats up but they just push air into ur skin and clothes. the air doesn't circulate in the space around the powerbook, so it just gets hotter and hotter. be careful, too, if the rubber things on the bottom corners of ur computer fall off, 1) they will stick to ur skin and you will have to pull them off (ouch!!), 2) if you put your computer back on your desk with the rubber things removed from your computer, there will be no circulation under your computer and it will get too hot to use/it will blow out due to overheating.

Is it really that bad? I always use my iBook on my lap, and it gets warm, after a while a tad bit unbearable. I was planning on getting a PowerBook, but I can't be bothered lugging a sheet of glass/metal/plate around with me.

Just prop the ass-end on a book or something.

It's not even that big a deal. If the Powerbooks had been designed to run so hot that using them without some sort of spacing device, Apple would let you know... or more likely redesign them so that wasn't a requirement.

Set the 'book's processor lower if you don't need it at full power-- System Preferences > Energy Saver > Options. I had my 12" ibook on full performance when plugged in and used it on my lap while plugged in-- bad idea. Set it lower and there will be a lot less heat.

Yeah, it really isn't too big a deal. Mine gets a bit hot, but it's never so hot that I can't bear to use it. If you put it on a desk for fifteen minutes or so, it'll cool right down.

I've just realised that this is what I'm doing right now.

My 12" PowerBook gets really hot if you running a processor intensive application like Handbrake. I have a Rubbermaid storage box lid that I use as a buffer zone between my Powerbook and me. It seems to work well.

If your PowerBook "gets hot fast," I suggest that you stop watching pornography for hours on it. ;) :)

Either that or you have some hot loins. ;) :D

lol
