I stumbled upon a couple of fairly new posts online saying it was possible to downgrade the 3GS to iOS 4.1 without the need of saved blobs. I downloaded the 4.1 IPSW for the 3GS and tried it, but I'm getting error 20 (I've checked the hosts file and so on, but there's no issues restoring to 6.1.3 so I'm guessing the problem isn't just connectivity). With any and all other IPSWs I get the "this device isn't eligible for this version" so it seems like there's still hope ;)

Does anyone know if Apple has closed the possibility of downgrading this easily, or is there a (couple of) step(s) that I'm missing?

I've searched, but I can't really seem to find anything useful. It might be my google-skills that are lacking, but if anyone could help I'd be very thankful :)

iOS 4.1 is still being signed by apple. Try restoring after putting the device into DFU mode

Yeah, that's what I've been doing :) Putting the phone in DFU, then alt+click to be able to choose the 4.1 IPSW - but it keeps giving me error 20...

Apple says error 20 is some kind of connectivity problem, but I can DFU restore it to 6.1.3 without any hickups so I'm not really sure what I'm missing...

From the iphone wiki:

"Error 20
Reportedly happens during failed downgrade attempts (iOS 2.0 to 1.1.1, 5 beta to 4.3.3).
Some have seen success afterwards by doing the downgrade from DFU mode instead of the normal Recovery mode."

Make sure you are in DFU not recovery.

Okay, I looked it up. Apparently "missing the cue" when putting the phone in DFU mode is really easy, which will instead put it in recovery mode. DFU mode does NOT turn on the screen with that USB and iTunes-logo.

Thanks for the heads up, it's installing now :)

What?

Why the heck is apple still signing that?

No clue, but I must say the 3GS definitely runs smoother on a fresh 4.1 install than on a fresh 6.1.3 install :)

On the other hand, the home button is messed up and there's no assistive touch in iOS 4...
