i always wanted to try the smaller form factor pro iphones, but always afraid the smaller screen would drain my eye even more since i watch a lot of videos on it. anyone has downsized from pro max to pro? has your eyesight gotten worse after the downsizing?

I'm doing exactly that move. I travel a lot so the battery and telephoto lens were the reasons I got the 15pm, but cameras now have parity and the battery on the regular 17 pro is as good or slightly better than previous Maxes.

I don't watch videos on my phone, and I find that all phone tasks for me are done equally as well on the smaller device. In fact I find most apps are designed to fit the smaller screen. Almost nothing is scaled up to use the max screen, not even apples own apps like notes. 6.3" to 6.9" is such an insignificant difference in usage, but fairly significant in how it fits in the hand and in the pocket.

The one nice thing about the Pro Max phones are that some apps actually display more information in landscape mode. I just rarely use my iPhone 15 Pro Max in landscape (I keep rotation locked to portrait 99% of the time).

I think I'm going to do this same downsize, but am also nervous about it feeling too small! My thought has sometimes been that the smaller screen will help discourage extra usage.

Anyway I'm crazy cause I've switched back and forth between pro max and pro sizes a few times before so clearly can never make up my mind haha. but they also both keep creeping up in size in general!

Me too. Got a 6 Plus when that came out, followed by a 6S. Then 7. Then X. XS Max. 11 Pro Max. 12 Pro. 13 Pro Max. 14 Pro. 15 Pro Max. Now 17 Pro.

I just officially pre-pre-ordered a 17 pro. Coming from 15 pro max. I wanted to downsize when I bought the 15, but talked myself out of it. Doing it this time. I played on a friends regular pro for a bit and didn’t have any issues typing or watching videos. The max is just too bulky and my hand sometimes hurts if I’m on it too much. I also have an iPad that rarely gets used, so I need to switch to that for my scrolling, reading, etc. we shall see if I regret it!

I'm going to the 17 Pro from the 16 Pro Max. I use my wife's 16 Pro from time to time and the additional screen size they added from the old 6.1" to the 6.3" makes enough of a difference that I think I'll be okay. I usually only buy the Pro Max when there's a difference in the cameras, but stuck to the 16PM because I was used to it. Now that the cameras are back to parity across models I can go back.

I’m downsizing. However you might want to go to a store and watch videos on both sizes. Because you said you do that a lot and the difference is noticeable.

For me, the PM is just too unwieldy. I’ll miss the wider screen for typing. But that’s about it.

Just preordered a blue 17 pro, finally took the leap to downsize. I’ve been using pro max since it first introduced back in 2019. Hope I don’t regret my decision. Side note, I would definitely ordered the iPhone Air but the single speaker just killed it for me. I don’t mind the single camera and battery, but the speaker was the deal breaker for me.

I had a 15 Plus and I quickly realized it was too big and heavy for me so I switched to a 16 Pro. I adjusted very quickly going from 6.7" to 6.3". Much better size but still too heavy. Now I'm seriously considering the 17e next year, just waiting to see the specs. That will be another downsize from 6.3" to 6.1" but I desperately want a very light phone. If the 17e either doesn't get released or somehow comes out heavier I will probably switch back to Samsung as their small S series model is usually under 6 ounces. That's my new cutoff, 6 ounces.

At least for me, downsizing screen size never effected my ability to use a phone as phones really are pretty big nowadays even the "small" ones. I still have an iphone 7 at home that I use on wifi and I keep kicking myself for not buying an SE3 when it came out. It's small, super light, and most importantly had rounded sides so it was comfortable to hold and use unlike today's phones.
