Try to customize a 15-inch MacBook Pro with a 4TB drive and you'll get a shipping notice of 5-6 weeks.

The NAND market is experiencing a supply glut, so it's unlikely Apple is experiencing any long lead times. I think it's a clear sign from Apple - "If you want a MacBook from the factory with a weird configuration, please wait. By the time we get the 4TB drive, the 15-inch model may not be available."

Either I'm dumb or I didn't get you. How is this any proof as to when the 16 inch models will come out?

I just got mine a few days back with the 4TB SSD (check my sig), it took 5 days to reach me.

Apple often significantly extends the lead time for their existing products when they're about to launch a new one. Usually happens as the factory retools for the new model.

Unless you actually believe Apple faces a 5-6 week lead time.

The 4TB SSD makes the largest difference for me on the configurator.
2TB delivers around Oct 25, go to 4TB the date changes to Nov 26th.
1TB says pickup today or delivery in 2 days.

Changing no other options.

Makes sense as Apple is likely stocking up on 15-inch logic boards while they retool for 16-inch MacBook Pro. The 4x1TB chips are most sensitive to price drops so it's unlikely Apple would keep much inventory. The 4-5 week ship date is likely when production resumes.

I know everyone has different needs for their computer, but I'm curious why people need a 4TB SSD? There is a pretty significant increase in cost and if you're doing something like video, I would think that an external storage solution would be better.

Sorry no, every year threads like this come up driven by wishful thinking. There could be a thousand reasons why a particular part has a long lead time. You might as well read tea leaves. I also find it very doubful they would launch a product so close to Christmas.

Unless that's the lead-time for all MacBook Pros, I don't think this is related at all. Its when stocks start to dry up completely (everything going to 2 weeks for example) that usually means there's a proper refresh due.

Probably mostly businesses who don't want to risk client's data being stored on an external drive. For a big business doing advertising campaigns and the like, its probably worth it to give key employees this configuration if they're heading out to clients' offices to demonstrate their work a lot. So they probably don't sell a lot of them, but enough to justify making the option.

Presumably the 16" MBP is only going to replace the very top end of the 15" line to begin with, so there's some chance this is related (I'd expect the 4TB option to be discontinued completely for the 15" models, and become an exclusive feature of the new 16").

Very good point @Falhófnir - I'd forgotten we didn't actually know if this is replacing the 15 or not.
One thing's for certain, this has been one of the most contradictory and doubtful product rumour cycles I've followed! There seems to be some new snippet out every other week to add further confusion to the mix over both the launch timeframe and just how the product will be positioned o_O I suppose at the least we'll know for sure by the end of the month, and probably have a good idea by the end of the week!

I work with very large datasets and need both the space and the read/write speeds.

Know what for sure? Lets say we hear nothing from apple or the rumor mills in the next two weeks. What would that tell us ‘for sure’?

That a 16" MBP isn't happening in October of course, I'd have thought that was obvious from the wider context of the thread and the parts of my post that you edited out ;)

(btw, bad forum etiquette to delete part of the message you're quoting. Bold it instead if you want to draw attention to a certain part. The only time you should delete part is if the post you are quoting is responding to two people and you're following on just one part).

Did you read the first post? This thread is clearly about whether an announcement is imminent, i.e. this month rather than next year...

I didnt realize “imminent” in this context meant by October 31, and not, lets say ... Nov. 5th lol

So I guess you were saying in your post ‘we’ll know by the end of the month whether it’s coming out in October’. Brilliant observations like that is why I’m an avid reader of the macrumors forums 🤗

This 4-5 week date now lines up with the leaked image in macOS 10.15.1. Unless... you believe the company with the best supply chain in the world actually faces a 4-5 week lead time for a 4TB SSD.

Looking back on this I found this rude comment hilarious because of how wrong it is.... 16" was released with 2-3 weeks of this post.

That was a coincidence.

Niels Bohr once said: "Prediction is very difficult, especially if it's about the future.". And that was what Mercurian's post was about.

it actually is very common for them to ramp down production on older models right before release of a newer one. The thread was meant to be speculative and that's fine.

"I think it's impossible to tell what's going to happen, and it's probably just a coincidence, I don't recommend wasting your time on this" would've been more than fine, but the "sorry no, you're one of a million threads that always pops up every year, you might as well read tea leaves" just bothered me, it was unnecessarily rude, so I found it funny knowing the release date was so close to this post.

Anyways, cheers.
