I encountered a strange problem today. Yesterday evening, I shut down my 16" M1 Max MBP as usual after using it for most of the day, so this evening when I went to use it again, I knew it was off and I also knew that I had been using the battery so I set it on my desk and attached the MagSafe cable. Only...it wouldn't charge. The orange light on the cable flashed every few seconds and the sound that plays when you connect a charging cable while the computer is on played each time it flashed. And it just kept doing that, over and over...

I thought maybe something had gone wrong with shutting it down the other day, so I booted the computer, everything normal, and shut it down again, plugged in the charging cable, and the same thing happened. Orange light flashes every few seconds, the "connection" sound plays each time, and it doesn't charge.

It seems I can only connect the charging cable while the laptop is on (while on, the cable connects with no issues). I've never encountered this before. Shouldn't I be able to connect the cable while it is off?

Yeah seems like it appears on 12.0.1 (reports indicate that it doesn't happen on 12.0) . And then it only seems to happen when you're using MagSafe with the included 140w charger. When it's below 80% and when it's turned off and lid closed..

A workaround for now is to plug it in. Then turn it off and close the lid. Or if your laptop is already off. Just plug the MagSafe and open the lid. It'll boot to the login screen and just click shutdown again. It'll be fine after that
