This isn't an issue I had with my M1 MacBook Air. But since upgrading to a 16" MacBook Pro (M1 Pro), I've found an irritating limitation that my Mac will only drive an external display in clamshell mode if that display is connected directly to the machine.
I have a huge Hyperdrive dock (the one that's basically a brick) and my display connects to it using DisplayPort. I'd so much rather have my desktop setup simplified this way, so this is a weird limitation to have. Fortunately I have an HDMI->USB-C cable I'm able to use...
