does it matter which ram you choose especially for apple software like FCPX? I'd assume apple has some efficient way of swapping the data where you wouldn't notice. Does any of this matter if I edit 10 minute 4k videos?

I have another Mac with 32gb and the ram will be 26gb used with fcpx running as well as other apps running.

Can anyone chime in with valid info or do I have to spend $400 for 32gb ram? Its hard to find this answer and im suspicious its hard because it may not be necessary

I use Fusion quite a bit so for me its a must have if I want to run more than couple of virtual machines at anyone time. Memory usage of applications isn't going to decrease only grow, for me memory is more important than disk space. With the low cost of M2 storage and the speed that you can throw large files over or offload to cloud if required, its just an inconvenience to address from time to time.

Can 16gb future proof for next 5 years if I don't use virtual machines or Final Cut Pro? Is it necessary to get 32GB? There is a big price jump. So, you know, where the question is from.

@JamestheCharming I'd say 16GB is fine for normal use, possibly even with final cut pro long term, depending on the size of the projects etc. It all comes down to your use profile.

Heck I edit 4k footage in FCP and some heavy PSD on Photoshop and everything runs pretty smooth on my base 16".

I got 32GB on my desktop and when I'm on the go I use the MBP and so far I didn't have any issues at all.

The other day I tried to push the 16GB with Parallels / Photoshop & Final Cut Pro and only managed to hit the 75% memory pressure.

Depends on your normal use I guess.....

I guess it depends 100% on you daily workload. For example, if you use external monitor and don't take advantage of the dGPU the new 13" with very fast RAM may done the job as well and last for 5 years...
